GTM is short for go to market. When founders, investors or product teams say GTM, they mean everything involved in getting a product in front of the right buyers and turning them into customers: who the buyer is, what you say to them, where you reach them, how they buy, and how you measure progress.
A note on the acronym: in web analytics, GTM also means Google Tag Manager, a tool for managing tracking code. That is a different thing entirely. On this site, GTM always means go to market in the business sense.
You will see GTM used in a few common phrases. GTM strategy means the set of decisions. GTM plan means the dated tasks that execute it. GTM motion means the way customers come in, such as self-serve or through sales. GTM team means the people responsible for it. For an AI startup, GTM usually starts with the founders and a lead channel like X, and grows into a dedicated team after the first repeatable way of getting users is found.
egExample
Our GTM for the new AI writing assistant is a founder-led launch on X followed by a self-serve trial.
